AEO vs SEO: What’s the Difference?
Search is splitting in two. Half your customers still ask Google; the other half now ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. SEO wins the first; AEO wins the second. Here’s the difference — and why you can’t ignore either.
The core difference
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) earns you rankings in classic search — the ten blue links on Google. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) makes your business the answer AI tools give when someone asks them for a recommendation. One competes for a position on a page; the other competes to be the answer.
Why AEO is different
In classic search, position #4 still gets clicks. In AI answers, there’s the answer and there’s invisible — no page two. AI engines don’t rank ten results; they synthesise one response and cite a handful of sources. Being one of those cited sources is a different game with different rules.
- SEO optimises pages to rank.
- AEO optimises entities, structure and trust so AI cites you.
- They share foundations — authority, clarity, content quality — but the finish line differs.
Why you need both
AI engines retrieve from the same web Google crawls, so a well-optimised, authoritative site is more likely to be cited by AI too. That means SEO is the foundation and AEO/GEO is the layer that wins the new half of search. Skip SEO and AEO has nothing to stand on; skip AEO and you’re invisible to half of tomorrow’s searchers.
Where to start
Get your SEO foundations solid, then add the AEO layer: structured data, clear answer-ready content, entity consistency, and third-party trust. We break the full playbook down in how to optimise your website for ChatGPT.
A concrete example
Say a customer wants a bakery in Hassan. In classic search they type “best bakery in Hassan,” scan a few results and the map pack, and click. In AI search they ask ChatGPT “what’s the best bakery in Hassan?” and get one paragraph naming two or three, with sources. SEO decides whether you’re in that first list of clickable results. AEO decides whether the AI names you at all. Same customer, same intent — two completely different competitions, and right now far fewer businesses are contesting the second.
What AI engines actually look for
- Clarity — content that answers the question directly and simply.
- Structure — schema and clean formatting the engine can parse.
- Consistency — the same facts about you everywhere, so you’re an unambiguous entity.
- Trust — citations and mentions from sources the engine already respects.
The practical takeaway
Don’t treat AEO as a separate project competing with SEO for budget. Treat it as one more layer on a healthy SEO foundation: the same authority and clarity that earn rankings increasingly decide whether AI cites you. Get the foundations right and you win both halves of search. That combined approach is exactly what our AEO & GEO services deliver alongside core SEO.
AEO vs SEO questions
Does AEO replace SEO?
No — it builds on it. AI engines pull from the same web Google crawls, so good SEO makes AEO more effective. Treat SEO as the foundation and AEO as the new layer on top.
Is it worth optimising for AI search already?
Yes — it’s the least crowded channel in search right now. Early movers become the cited default before competition arrives.
