What Is Quality Score in Google Ads?
Quality Score is the reason two businesses can bid on the same keyword and pay very different prices. Understand it, and you can cut your Google Ads costs without cutting your bids. Here’s how it works.
What Quality Score is
Quality Score is Google’s 1–10 rating of how relevant and useful your ad and landing page are for a given keyword. Higher scores mean lower costs and better ad positions — Google’s way of rewarding advertisers who give searchers what they want.
The three things that drive it
- Expected click-through rate — how likely people are to click your ad.
- Ad relevance — how well your ad matches the search.
- Landing page experience — how useful, fast and relevant your page is.
How to improve it
- Group tightly-themed keywords so ads can match closely.
- Write ads that mirror the exact search and offer.
- Send clicks to a focused, fast landing page that matches the ad — not your homepage.
- Prune irrelevant keywords with negatives so your click-through rate stays high.
Why it compounds
Better landing pages and tighter ads raise Quality Score, which lowers cost per click, which frees budget for more clicks — a virtuous cycle. Fast, relevant landing pages are where our web development and Google Ads management work together to make every rupee go further.
A worked example
Two businesses bid on the same keyword. Business A has a generic ad pointing to its homepage; Business B has an ad that mirrors the search, pointing to a focused, fast landing page about exactly that service. Google gives B a higher Quality Score — so B can appear above A while paying less per click. Same keyword, same auction, very different economics. That gap is Quality Score, and it’s entirely within your control.
The fastest ways to raise it
- Split broad ad groups into tight, single-theme ones so ads match searches closely.
- Write ad copy that echoes the exact search term and offer.
- Send each ad to a dedicated landing page, not a catch-all homepage.
- Add negative keywords so irrelevant searches don’t drag down your click-through rate.
Why it compounds
Better relevance raises Quality Score, which lowers cost per click, which frees budget for more clicks and more data — a virtuous cycle. It’s the one lever that cuts costs without touching your bids. Fast, relevant landing pages are where our web development and Google Ads management work together to make every rupee reach further.
Quality Score questions
What is a good Quality Score?
7 and above is strong, 8–10 is excellent. Below 5 usually means your ads or landing pages need to match the search more closely.
Does Quality Score really lower my cost?
Yes — a higher score directly reduces what you pay per click for the same position. Relevance is the cheapest optimisation in paid search.
How fast can I improve Quality Score?
Ad and keyword changes can move it within days; landing page improvements take a little longer to reflect but have the biggest lasting impact.
