You know robots.txt guides search crawlers. llms.txt does the same for AI — a simple file that hands language models a clean guide to your site. Here’s what it is, why it matters, and how to add one.

What llms.txt is

llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of your site that gives AI language models a curated guide to your content — a summary of your business and links to your key pages. Think of it as an index card handed to AI, so it doesn’t have to piece your site together by crawling everything.

Why it helps

  • Makes your key facts and pages easy for AI to find and understand.
  • Reduces the chance AI misrepresents or confuses your business.
  • Signals that you’re an AI-aware, well-organised source.

It pairs with a companion llms-full.txt that contains your full site text for engines that want to ingest everything in one fetch.

Honest caveat: llms.txt is an emerging convention, not yet read by every AI crawler. It’s a low-cost, forward-looking addition — not a magic switch. Your structured data, entity consistency and authority still do the heavy lifting.

How to create one

List your business summary and key contact facts at the top, then link your main pages grouped by section — services, locations, company, insights. Keep it clean and accurate, and keep it consistent with your structured data and entity signals.

Part of a bigger picture

llms.txt is one piece of AEO/GEO — genuinely useful, but most powerful alongside schema, clear content and real authority. We include it as standard because a studio that sells AI search optimisation should practise it. Our own site runs both llms.txt and llms-full.txt.

llms.txt vs robots.txt

They’re cousins with different jobs. robots.txt tells search crawlers what they may and may not access. llms.txt goes further — it hands AI models a friendly, curated guide to your most important content and facts, so they don’t have to reconstruct your site by crawling everything. Think of robots.txt as the “rules of entry” and llms.txt as the “welcome map.”

What to put in it

  • A short, accurate summary of your business and what you do.
  • Your key contact facts — name, location, phone, email.
  • Links to your main pages, grouped by section (services, locations, company, insights).
  • Optionally, a companion llms-full.txt with your full site text for engines that ingest everything at once.

Where it fits in the bigger picture

Be realistic: llms.txt is a smart, low-effort, forward-looking addition — not a magic switch, and not yet read by every AI crawler. The heavy lifting for AI visibility still comes from structured data, entity consistency, useful content and genuine authority. We include llms.txt as standard in our AEO/GEO work because a studio that sells AI search optimisation should practise it — our own site runs both llms.txt and llms-full.txt.

llms.txt questions

Is llms.txt required?

No — it’s optional and emerging. It’s a smart, low-effort addition, but robots.txt, structured data and authority matter more for how AI understands you today.

Where does llms.txt go?

At the root of your domain, like yourdomain.com/llms.txt — the same place as robots.txt.

Will llms.txt get my business cited by AI?

It helps engines understand you, but citation depends on the full picture — entity clarity, structured data, content quality and third-party trust. llms.txt supports that, it doesn’t replace it.
